2023 Goals and Benchmarks

North Jakarta Mangrove Monkey Survey (NJMM) reached some wonderful milestones in 2022.

First, a recap of last year:

I was able to conduct observations 34 times, at four different site locations. At the main observation site (North Jakarta PIK) I watched the monkeys 30 times for a total of more than 60 hours.

I have been able to identify six individual troop members by their unique characteristics (colorings, sexual dimorphism, facial hair, body size and social standing).

During the past year I've also attended two online seminars and contributed to the media and data for three primate conservation organizations.

Via a YouTube channel, I created eight videos that garnered more than 125,000 views, which helps expand the educational outreach for my monkey watching hobby.

I wrote a guest blog and contributed to another online article about long-tailed macaques and their conservation.

I've documented conditions at the local animal markets, where macaques are trafficked.

Lastly, I've donated funds to the park in North Jakarta, where I visit and observe the macaques.

For 2023 I envision these goals:

Go on expedition to North Sumatra and observe wild orangutans

Present to several thousand students via National Biodiversity Teach-In 2023

Conduct 20 more observations on Troop Bravo

Create five new YouTube educational videos

Write and post findings from Year One

Create an educational pamphlet about the long-tailed macaques in Indonesian Bahasa (also in English) to gift to the park where I do the survey.

Begin writing a nonfiction book about Troop Bravo

I'm truly excited to start in on these goals and to further study the monkeys in North Jakarta!
